“Food-inspired beauty strikes again,” says celebrity makeup artist Jillian Dempsey when I ask her about the new jam lip trend. From glazed doughnut skin to strawberry girl makeup, our favorite snacks have continuously found their way into beauty trends over the past few years. Now, pigmented, wet, jammy lips that look like you just got caught eating a jar of Bonne Maman are trending, and the timing couldn’t be better as it’s the perfect chic makeup trend for the summer-to-fall transition. Plus, it’s not the first time we’ve seen jam inspire a trend, lest we forget jammy nails. TikTok has helped boost the popularity of the jam lips trend with engaging creator how-to videos and specific jammy lip products going viral on the app. Here’s what the experts have to say about the look.

What are jam lips?

“Jam lips are a makeup trend where deep, glossy and juicy berry tones are worn on the lips,” says Dempsey. Dibs Beauty co-founder Courtney Shields describes the look as “Juicy, yummy, jammy-toned lips that pack a punch with pigment, but are also really hydrated looking.”

How to get the look

Celebrity makeup artist Michael Shepherd says the best way to get jam lips with “diffused lip liner and super hydrated lips, with the color coming from underneath the glossiness!” Dempsey says this look can easily be achieved if you have the right shades and gloss—she recommends a matte liner in a cooler tone and gloss or lipstick in a deep berry shade with warm undertones. If you want to use the diffused liner technique, Shepherd recommends “filling the entire lip before applying your added lip treatment for added opacity and longevity.” If you don’t have time for a full routine having the right product on hand can help you get the look in just a few swipes. “As a quicker option, just grab a high-shine gloss in the right deep berry shade to give you the look instantly,” says Dempsey.
