Fall is officially here, and it’s finally starting to feel like it. As the season begins to settle in, it’s the perfect time to update your makeup color palette. A toasted brown blush, forest green nail polish, and cool-toned bronzer are all appropriate. Dark lipsticks, with a vampy vibe, have a similar appeal this time of year. You may have already stocked up on burgundy tones, but a berry lip can be equally alluring. Like burgundy, it has a rich wine element that delivers a bold and daring look. It’s powerful and teases a hint of seduction, but can be equally as innocent when toned down. It’s easy to become intimidated by the hue, but this season’s berry lip trend has something to offer everyone. In fact, that’s one of the top reasons it’s quietly become the new it shade. According to celebrity makeup artist and founder of MXKA, Kelli Anne Sewell, a berry lip isn’t just chic, it’s also fresh and extremely wearable. Below, the experts share the best ways to wear berry lips this fall and their tips for perfecting the look.

How to wear berry lips this season

Autumn begs for moodier colors, especially when it comes to makeup. While it’s true that the season’s arrival plays a big role, the experts say it’s not the only reason berry lips are trending this year. According to Sewell, the uptick in glamorous makeup looks is partly to blame. With the return of full coverage makeup routines in full swing, she says people are more open to experimenting with bold shades. A bold berry lip is the perfect way to top off a gorgeous face of glam. Runway trends are another influence that has brought the berry lip into focus. As makeup artist and senior manager of pro education and artistry at Make Up For Ever, Eddie Duyos notes several designers championed the shade during the New York and Milan shows.

“The rich shade resonates with the season’s mysterious and ethereal atmosphere, perfectly complementing the otherworldly aesthetic seen on the runways,” he says. It’s a statement color that has a lot of range. That said, achieving the perfect berry lip depends on the desired look. Stains work best for a just-bitten look, while matte formulas deliver a deeper visual impact. Regardless of how you choose to wear the color, a highly pigmented product tailored to your complexion is key. For a sultry berry lip, Duyos recommends opting for a product that is four to five shades deeper than your natural skin tone. This will enhance the richness of the shade and deliver a dramatic effect. If you’re aiming for something more playful, he suggests adding a few toppings. “Gloss, shimmer and even duochrome pigments take berry to another level and create a dazzling, party-ready lip look,” he says.

When working with a berry lip liner, Sewell recommends using a light hand. “Start with a light layer and then build it up. It’s always easier to add than take away. Once you’ve lined the lips, use your finger to sheer out the color for a more wearable finish,” she says.
