Rare Beauty is a master at soft-launching game-changing products. Long before liquid blushes captivated the beauty set, Selena Gomez launched the brand with a cushiony liquid formula that would set a standard for the category. When the brand debuted a body-care collection, they didn’t just give us lotion—they gave us a full-fledged self-care moment with an aromatherapy pen and skin-care-fueled hair and body mist. So when it came time for Rare Beauty to enter the fragrance category, why would we expect anything less intriguing? Like the launches before them, the Rare Beauty Fragrance Layering Balms are poised to be extra special and ultra-refined.
If you’ve ever doomscrolled PerfumeTok, you may have come across a similar method known as the Vaseline perfume hack. A simple solution to making your fragrance last is to gently melt down a jar of Vaseline and infuse it with your go-to perfume. The process is easy to do. After bringing a pot of water to a boil, the Vaseline jar is placed in the pot to melt the contents. A few spritzes of fragrance add the scent while a quick stir ensures it’s evenly dispersed before cooling. The result is a custom perfume lubricant that melts into your skin for a long-lasting aroma. But despite being a popular hack on TikTok, the idea of fragrance salves remained elusive in the mainstream fragrance industry. Rare Beauty is changing that with their Fragrance Layering Balms.
A recent post on the brand’s Instagram account details what’s to come from these unique products. Designed to be worn under your fragrance, the balms act as a primer to enhance and personalize your scent. The collection will include four scents, pleasing different fragrance categories. Woody Oak will be an earthy fragrance laced with notes of oakmoss, patchouli and dry woods. Floral Peony Blossom has sweet notes of flower blossoms, including freesia, peony and musk blossom.
The launch will coincide with Rare Beauty’s first fragrance, Rare Eau de Parfum, which is described as a decadent blend of creamy gourmand notes, spiced ginger and earthy sandalwood. The fragrance layering balms are made to enhance these specific notes in the perfume. Fragrance layering is nothing new, but Rare Beauty’s approach offers a unique take. Instead of spritzing your skin with base scent or slathering your body with fragranced oil, you just need a bit of balm rubbed onto the pulse points.
These balms offer more than just delicious aromas. They’re formulated to smoothly sink in without leaving a sticky residue, and are vegan, cruelty-free and safe for sensitive skin. While we never doubt Selena when it comes to beauty, it’s clear Rare Beauty’s foray into fragrance will be an exciting ride. Rare Beauty’s Rare Eau de Parfum and Fragrance Layering Balms aren’t available for sale until August 7th, so you might want to mark your calendars now.
