You may think you know your body like the back of your hand, but do you really know what’s going on beneath the surface? A recent survey from Clue revealed just how little women understand about their menstrual cycle, menopause and more.
According to the survey, 28 percent of women don’t know when they are most fertile, and 58 percent cannot correctly name all four stages of the menstrual cycle. Additionally, one in six people is unable to identify whether their cycles are irregular or not.
Beyond the lack of education on the female reproductive system, with 62 percent of women saying they wish they had learned about fertility earlier, there’s also a breadth of misinformation being spread online making matters worse. The survey found that 82 percent of U.S. women are concerned about encountering medical misinformation online, and 55 percent confirm they have encountered medical information online that they do not trust.
“Too many women and people with cycles are left in the dark about what’s happening in their own bodies,” says board-certified OBGYN and Chief Medical Officer at Clue, Charis Chambers, MD. “They’re misinformed, dismissed or confused, especially when it comes to conditions like PCOS or major transitions like menopause.”
