Dozens of products claim to fade hyperpigmentation and dark spots, but we’ve tried just about everything, and not nearly enough of them live up to the hype. One that does? Alastin A-LUMINATE Brightening Serum ($182), which dermatologists also love. Rooted in science, like everything in the Alastin line, this serum is formulated with the right actives and technology to actually elicit change in the skin. Here’s my honest review.

The Benefits of This Brightening Serum

Seeing a new dark spot pop up (oftentimes, it feels like it happened overnight) is not a great feeling. Perhaps not everyone feels this way, but as a beauty editor of 15-plus years who is passionate about sun protection, it feels like a tiny sign of failure. However, I know this serum will help fade it, especially if I start using it right away. And, I love that it’s so effective without using hydroquinone (or retinol, so I was still able to use it during pregnancy). It was also our 2023 Award Winner for “Best Brightening Serum.”

The big point of difference in this formula is the brand’s proprietary PATH-3 technology, which reduces the recurrence of pigmentation on the surface of the skin while also protecting against future damage. The hero ingredients include powerhouse brightener tranexamic acid and multitasking niacinamide, which helps support a more even skin tone. There’s also squalane and glycerin for hydration, peptides for plumping and a vitamin C derivative (ascorbyl palmitate) for an extra brightening boost and antioxidant support. Not only do these actives help lessen the appearance of all types of discoloration (including stubborn melasma), but it has a positive impact on redness too. I’m someone who has a little bit of both, so I love the added benefit there. In a clinical study, 86 percent of participants agreed that the appearance of their dark spots and discoloration was diminished after eight weeks of use.

The serum has a nice silky texture and absorbs quickly; it’s also fragrance-free. I’ve never experienced any irritation—just brighter, more even skin that has this newfound radiance. Because it’s rich in antioxidants, it’s also a great serum to layer under sunscreen for even more defense against free-radical damage. If you’re looking for a brightening serum to use this summer, this is a fantastic option. You also use it after in-office treatments like lasers and chemical peels, to help boost and maintain your results. I have to also shout out the packaging because the twist-up pump keeps the formula stable and it won’t spill in your bag.
