It’s been a while since we’ve seen Madonna wearing any other hair color than blond (she’s naturally a brunette, though blond hair has become her signature). Still, the singer just shared a recent hair transformation that’s so bold, she looks practically unrecognizable. On May 19, Madonna took to her Instagram story with a few photos of her newer, darker hue that she says was inspired by her mother, Madonna Louise Ciccone, who died of breast cancer at 30 when the singer was just five years old.
“I missed my Mother [sic] so I channeled her,” she wrote over one of the selfies. Her hair was styled in a shoulder-length bob with big curls that framed her face.
Just a few weeks ago, Madonna appeared at the Met Gala, still wearing her blond hair with dark, partially grown-out roots. She pulled it back into a short, low ponytail with tendrils framing both sides of her face. Before this week, the last time she wore her naturally dark hair color was over a decade ago when she appeared at the 2013 Met Gala wearing a shoulder length bob with blunt bangs. She also wore her natural color pretty frequently as she rose to fame in the eighties, before blond hair became synonymous with her look.
It’s not clear if the new brown hair is actually a wig she decided to throw on for the day or not, but whatever the case, the color looks great on her.
