As Kudo noted, its origins date back to Japan, where the silhouette was first introduced in the country as a sock. The design was purposeful and made to be worn with traditional Japanese footwear that featured a thong-style strap. The big leap came when the look was adopted by Martin Margiela, who debuted the tabi boot in 1988. The bold design became a staple look for the brand, turning heads in the fashion industry. Even popular almond nails are less preferred. “Square or squoval nails are best because they have a flare edge, which matches the clean and geometric aspects of the tabi design,” says Kudo.
